Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. DuVernay worked as a night nurse so that she could give her aunt the time she required in the days to be able to enjoy theatre, literature, and art. She showed DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay discovered that art can be an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who was a social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and educated. Her father was awed by the historical civil rights marches on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summers that DuVernay was inspired her later to write a script for a movie about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She then attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she was awarded certificates in English as well as African American studies. When she was still in school, DuVernay became interested in producing to television journalism. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was asked to investigate the waste at the home of a member of the jury. She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to change to the world of public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a PR professional in a small production studio right after graduating from college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own firm of public relations known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency also launched several social media and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
