Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was raised within Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise helped her develop a love for artistic expression and creative thinking. DuVernay worked as a night nurse, allowing her aunt time that she needed during the days to be able to enjoy writing, theatre and literature. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized through the example of her mother that art can be an effective tool for social change. Similarly DuVernay's mother was conscious of social issues and taught her to say something through the art of. DuVernay was raised living with family members in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The DuVernay's father was a witness to the civil rights protests on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay used the time she spent there to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she was awarded certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay started producing for broadcast journalism while she was in college. Her internship was with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to examine the garbage at the residence by a member jury. The jury member was unhappy with her journalistic duties and decided that she would switch to the field of public relations. DuVernay began her work as a junior publicity assistant at a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. In 1999, she established her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
